The Minneapolis Greenway follows the route of a century-old Milwaukee Road railroad corridor. The corridor was abandoned west of Hiawatha Avenue, and in 2000 work started to transform the corridor into a car-free bicycle and pedestrian route across the city.

Public art decorates the Midtown Greenway, like this graffitied wall. Temporary artworks such as straw figures, banners and chalk art have been placed in the Midtown Greenway, and the Midtown Greenway Coalition hopes to have funds to acquire permanent art at some point in the future.
