January 16: Martin Luther King Day On this holiday, several organizations have celebrations, community events, breakfasts, performances and more, to celebrate and remember Dr. King. Here's a list of Martin Luther King Day events in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
January 20 - January 22: The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships The 2012 outdoor hockey tournament returns to Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. Hundreds of teams formed from NHL legends, high school greats, and neighborhood stars compete for the Golden Shovel.
January 21: Tet Festival - Vietnamese New Year The Vietnamese Community of Minnesota's community New Year celebration for the Year of the Dragon at Kennedy High School in Bloomington. Admission is free, the event is open to the public.
January 21: Lake Harriet Kite Festival bring your kite to fly on frozen Lake Harriet, learn to ice fish, roast marshmallows, or just watch hundreds of kites flying at this free festival.
January 21, 22, and weekends through February 5: Art Shanty Projects at Medicine Lake, in Plymouth. Cancelled for 2011, but joyfully back for 2012. Minnesota artists construct fishing house/art installations out on the lake, and open them for the public to visit, and participate in events and performances at, on January and early February weekends. Free.
January 21-29 Bloomington Winter Fete Lots of winter fun in Bloomington's parks, including a broomball tournament, sleigh rides, and family activities like snow painting and sledding.
