Minnesota is nationally recognized as a place where the trees are respected and cared for - the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are both designated a "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation. And they are not alone. 96 other cities around Minnesota, including many in the Metro Area, are also recognized as a Tree City USA too.

When is the best time of the year for fall color in Minnesota?

The exact time for fall color depends on the weather, and on where you are in Minnesota.

In the Twin Cities, the leaves usually begin to change color in mid- to late-September. The peak of the fall color is usually around first and second week in October. The colors last another week or two past that, and then the leaves start to fall and we can expect winter days soon.

In Northern Minnesota, such as Duluth, Ely, the North Shore and Grand Marais, the fall color season begins earlier, perhaps as soon as Labor Day. The peak of fall color is usually the very end of September and first week of October. By mid-October, the leaves will be falling and winter will start to set in.

Where are the best places to go to see Fall Color in Minnesota?

With many cities in the Metro Area designated Tree Cities USA, it's easy to appreciate fall color in your own back yard and all around the Twin Cities. Here's some great places to see fall color in the Twin Cities.

Or, another day trip idea is to go Apple Picking, or visit a Pumpkin Patch. There are many within an hour's drive of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
