A List of the 17 Neighborhoods in St Paul

By Clara James, About.com

St. Paul is divided into 17 neighborhoods. Here's a list of St. Paul's official neighborhoods.

North End

The North End neighborhood is between the Como neighborhood, and the Interatate 35E. It is residental neighborhood, homes here have lower than the St. Paul average household income.

Payne-Phalen

Payne-Phalen is a residental neighborhood to the east of I-35E. The neighborhood is named for Phalen Park, a pretty park with a large, attractive lake, and Payne Boulevard, the main north-south street.

Payne-Phalen is a very varied neighborhood. It has some of the highest levels of crime in St. Paul, and also has many safe residental streets and quiet parks.

St. Anthony Park

St. Anthony Park is in the north-west corner of St. Paul, on the border of the city of Minneapolis. This neighborhood is part residental, and part industrial. The Universtity of Minnesota's St Paul campus is located just to the north-east of St. Anthony Park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Anthony_Park_%28Saint_Paul%29

Summit-University

Summit-University is St. Paul's oldest residential neighborhood. The high river bluffs give the area, and main thoroughfare, Summit Avenue, it's name. Summit Avenue has impressive Victorian mansions, several independent restaurants and shops along Selby Avenue, and the magnificent Cathedral of St. Paul.

Thomas-Dale

Thomas-Dale, is also called Frogtown, for reasons lost to time. It is a small working-class neighborhood between University Avenue and the Railroad. http://www.rchs.com/neighborhoods/frogtown.htm

West Seventh/Fort Road

This diagonal neighborhood is named for the main thoroughfare, Fort Road, which begins life as West Seventh Street in downtown St. Paul, and runs inbetween the Mississippi and I-35E, turning into Fort Road on the way. Both names for this part of the road are used interchangably. The area north of Fort Road is primarity residental, and south of Fort Road is several factories and a power station on the banks of the river. Much redevelopment is happening here, taking advantage of the river and the proximity to downtown St. Paul. with old factories being turned into housing and new executive condominius being built.

Hamline-Midway

Hamline-Midway is, as the name suggests, in the middle of the city. It's partly residental, with some light industry and business parks.
