The MMAA has an impressive permanent collection of some 3,500 objects by American artists. The collection contains paintings, sculpture, photographs and other works dating from the 19th century to the present. The focus is on Minnesotan and local artists.
On show at the museum are three or four special exhibitions, held over the year. The special exhibitions are interspersed with displays of selected pieces from the permanent collection.
Due to the gallery's small size, the museum is often closed between exhibitions.
The MMAA takes advantage of it's location, high on the Mississippi river bluffs in the summer. Patio Nights, an evening concert series showcasing local musicians, is held on their river view patio over the summer. As well as music, the MMAA hosts lectures, gallery tours, family events and other special events.
It's convenient to combine a visit to the Minneapolis Museum of American Art with a visit to the Science Museum of Minnesota, who are almost neighbors on Kellogg Boulevard. The Science Museum is just west of the MMAA.
