The Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis

By , About.com Guide

The Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis is a legendary venue in downtown Minneapolis. The Orpheum Theater is on Hennepin Avenue, in downtown Minneapolis' Theater District. The Hennepin Stages and Pantages Theater keep the Orpheum Theater company on Hennepin Avenue.

The Orpheum Theater opened in 1921, and has hosted plays, concerts, big bands, vaudeville, comedy, and screened movies. By 1988, the Orpheum Theater was feeling its age, and the Minneapolis Community Development Agency purchased the theater from the latest owners, Bob Dylan and his brother. The theater was restored and updated to accommodate modern productions, and re-opened in 1993. The Hennepin Theatre Trust now owns and operates the Orpheum Theater, as well as the neighboring Pantages and Hennepin Stages.

Now restored with opulent decor, magnificent chandelier, all in the finest beaux-arts style, the Orpheum is a true old fashioned theater. The Hennepin Theater Trust keeps the theater busy with productions one after the other throughout the year.

The Holiday season is the busiest, but there's usually several productions every month at the Orpheum Theater. Traveling Broadway shows, well-known performers and artists, and musicals are standard fare for the Orpheum Theater.
