Minneapolis/St. Paul Named 2008 Solar America City

Friday April 25, 2008
On March 28, the US Department of Energy announced the 2008 Solar American Cities and we are on the list. Seems strange when our solar panels are under several inches of snow for half of the year, but our summer sun is perfect for generating solar power.

Solar America Cities receive financial and technical assistance from the Department of Energy, and city officials commit to reducing city-specific barriers, such as streamlining permit procedures, to encourage the adoption of solar energy by residents and businesses.

The city of Minneapolis already has several solar installations, and is planning to build what will be the Midwest's largest solar installation to power the city's electric vehicle fleet.

Also in Minneapolis, the Wedge Co-op has one of the largest commercial solar water heating systems in the Twin Cities, and the Linden Hills Co-op has a roof-full of solar panels generating electricity for the store.

In St. Paul, the Old Man River Cafe, now Cafe Juliahna, installed what they claim to be the world's first solar powered coffee roaster in 2004. Inspired by their example, Izzy's Ice Cream installed 6000 square feet of solar panels that have been helping power their ice cream factory since 2005.

A small but growing number of local residents are installing solar panels too. Solar water heating is cheaper to install and more economical than generating electricity for homeowners.

The non-profit agency Minnesota Renewable Energy Society promotes renewable energy, including solar power, and provides resources for local residents and businesses who want to learn more about solar power. They also hold educational classes and events to promote renewable energy, including the 16th Annual Solar Boat Regatta on Sunday May 17 at Lake Phalen in St. Paul.

Who knew you could sail a boat, make a great cup of coffee, and freeze ice cream, all with solar power!
