Honeycrisp Apples. University of Minnesota.Apple season has started, and apple orchards around the Twin Cities metro area are open for apple picking. Paula Red, Zestar!, Red Baron, and other early season apples are available now, and look out for Honey Crisp, and more mid-season varieties coming soon.

Some orchards have the works - hay rides, playgrounds, petting zoos, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and the like, perfect for a family day out. And, there's usually a farm shop with jellies, baked goods, cider and other items for sale. Others prefer to focus on just growing and tending their crops, for a peaceful day out in the country.

Whatever your preference, here's a list of apple orchards around Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Always call before you set out, to check on opening hours, and which apples are available. Apple availability depends on the weather, how far into the season it is, and how much demand the farm has had.
