Adventure Races and Mud Runs in Minneapolis and St. Paul

I don't know about you, but I have a very low attention span for running. Perhaps many of you are the same, because every summer, a couple of new adventure races, mud runs and obstacle course races appear on the Twin Cities running calendar.

In recent years I've run in the Amazing Race-style Great Urban Adventure, biked all over Minneapolis in the Urban Assault Ride (which I highly, highly recommend) and last year, got muddy in the Go Commando 5K mud run and obstacle course. All great fun and with plenty of variety from all that boring old running.

Here's the top ten adventure races in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul this summer. Registration for many of the races is already open. You'll save money by registering early, plus have something on your calendar to get you motivated to start training.

My top picks for 2011? Two races both new to the Twin Cities. Tough Mudder has a fearsome reputation, twice as long as your standard mud run and with intimidating obstacles, a significant percentage of starters don't finish the course. And the Oyster Urban Adventure Race makes teams of at least 3 run, bike, kayak, get wet, and throws in some obstacles too.
