Free, legal, and you can keep them forever. St. Paul Public Library just launched Freegal, thousands of MP3s anyone with a St. Paul library card can download.

As long as you don't have overdue materials, or unpaid fines, you can download up to three MP3s every week. The music comes from artists from Sony Music Entertainment and includes many major acts such as John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Carrie Underwood and Shakira. It will take you a month to get a whole album, but you can do it from the comfort of your home.

St. Paul Library is enthusiastic about the new scheme, hoping to save their librarians' time in checking out and shelving CDs. They are also anticipating a time when CDs become obsolete in favor of downloaded tracks, and want to stay up to date with the way people listen to music.

Other metro libraries are considering similar systems for MP3 downloads. Already, Hennepin County Library and Dakota County Library offer e-books for download to library card holders, and St. Paul is working on making e-books available in 2011.
