Looking for something to do on these cold winter evenings? Do you knit or crochet, or would like to learn either? Here's a good reason to get out those needles - or go buy some.

The Yarnery wool store in St. Paul gathers knitted and crocheted mittens, gloves, hats and scarves and distribute them to St. Paul school children in need of cold weather gear. It's called the Mitten Fairy program.

The Yarnery also accepts donations of yarn, needles and knitting supplies. Suitable yarn is used by volunteer knitters to make items for the Mitten Fairy program. What isn't suitable for mittens is passed on to other non-profit and community groups in need. A programs teaching weaving to recent immigrants, and a group of knitters making hats for people who lost hair from chemotherapy are two of several organizations who benefit from donated items.

And here's another incentive - every time you donate an item to the Mitten Fairy program, you can earn discounts on future purchases at the Yarnery.

More information on the Mitten Fairy program, and more on knitting for other, from The Yarnery's website.
