This summer, anyone can exhibit their art or performance at the Walker Art Center. The Walker's newest project is named Walker Open Field, and as the name suggests, opens the grassy space behind the gallery up to anyone or any group who wants to perform, make art, display their works, collaborate with other folks, or just watch the activities.

The Walker Art Center envisions a "cultural commons" with visitors participating, and people bringing their own projects to the field. There'sa few rules - no digging holes, no camping overnight and everything has to be free.

To get things started, the Walker Art Center has organized projects for Open Field, including a Drawing Club, a host of family events for the first Saturday of every month - also the day when admission to the Walker galleries are free - and several live music events. Local alt-rockers Tapes 'n Tapes headline Open Exposure, a festival of big local names and talented high school students on July 11.

They want the public to join in and bring their own ideas, and to welcome and inspire visitors, a Tool Shed provides with art materials to be creative, as well as supplies for hanging out and enjoying the field like picnic blankets and portable radios.

Walker Open Field begins on June 3, several events are scheduled for Saturday June 5, and all the activities and entertainment are free. The rest of the calendar is still evolving so check the Open Field project's website for the latest on what's happening over the rest of the summer.
