The University Avenue Project: Six Miles of Art in St. Paul

Over the last three years, photographer Wing Young Huie has taken pictures of people who live and work on University Avenue in St. Paul. Starting on May 1, businesses along University Avenue will be displaying photographs in their windows and storefronts, 400 in total. Many photographs are in black and white, and a large number of the subjects pose with a chalkboard with their own words written on it.

Wing has used a whole street as a gallery before. In the summer and fall of 2000, several miles of Minneapolis' Lake Street was the venue for exhibiting hundreds of photographs of its residents. The same year, the Minneapolis Star Tribune named Wing Artist of the Year.

For the University Avenue Project, Wing and Public Art St. Paul have added another dimension. Just west of the intersection of Hamline and University Avenues, giant projection screens will display a two hour slideshow of photographs every evening at dusk, accompanied by recorded music from local artists. The screens are made of stacks of shipping containers, and if that wasn't impressive enough, there will be a monthly cabaret show at the projection site with live entertainment.

It all begins on Saturday May 1, and the first cabaret will be on May 29. The University Avenue Project will run until October 31.

You can find more information, and a schedule of events at the University Avenue Project's Website.
