Apparently, this is not fatal to the participants. The Red Bull Flugtag asks pilots to build an object you think will fly, and get four of your friends to push you and it off a ramp over the Mississippi River in front of 300,000 spectators. There's a spot on the podium and glory for the winning aircraft, judged not just on distance but on creativity and showmanship.
This year, the Red Bull Flugtag is going to be at Harriet Island in St. Paul on July 24.
Red Bull only wants the coolest kids in their flying competition, so to have a chance to get on the runway, you have to apply with a sketch of your airplane and a summary of how your team plans to impress the judges. Applications need to be received by April 16. It's free to apply and to enter the competition.
