2009 started bitterly cold in January, warmed up with above-freezing temperatures in February, then the mercury made our heads spin, with the weather giving us a devastating ice storm on the North Shore in mid March, meltwater causing the Fargo/Moorhead floods in late March, but still cold enough to keep ski resorts open until early April.
The summer of 2009 was considerably cooler and less humid than normal, which meant less mosquitoes, but also bought less rainfall than average, putting most of Minnesota in drought conditions. We also had less severe weather than average and fewer tornadoes - perhaps news to Minneapolitans who experienced the first tornado to hit Minneapolis since 1981, on August 19.
Fall began with a string of cool days, then we thought it was all over when October turned cold, and wet. But then, we got a reprieve with the second warmest November for a century.
The first blizzard of the year, December 9, marked the start of winter, and consistently cold days ever since, followed up with the most snow on Christmas Day for many years and a frigid end of the year.
And so onwards to 2010 - what do you think the new year has in store for us, weather-wise?
