Butterflies and Free Carousel Rides at Como Park and Como Zoo

Last year's Blooming Butterflies was one of the most popular attractions at Como Park, and this summer the butterflies will be back for one last time. A giant caterpillar shaped enclosure holds thousands of butterflies from all over the world, together with plants and sweet-smelling flowers. See butterflies flutter right by your face, observe them close up perched on the flowers, and maybe they'll even land right on you. Wear bright colors or florals for the best chance of a butterfly choosing to sit on your shoulder. Blooming Butterflies opens on June 19 daily through September 7.

The most famous summer attraction at Como Zoo is the Sparky the Sea Lion Show. The show has been running for over fifty years, and several Sparkys have held the starring role. Arrive early on the weekend to get a seat to view the current Sparky doing tricks. Shows are at 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and are free.

Cafesjian's Carousel, a restored 1914 carousel, operates throughout the summer. There is a free ride day once a month - this year free rides are on June 15, July 13, August 17 and September 14. The carousel operates from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m unless it's too cold or too hot - the temperature must be between 45 and 95 degrees. Tickets are usually $1.50 per person, although it's free to ride any time if you are under 1 or over 90.

Parking is always difficult at Como Park. During the summer, the Como Shuttle runs from two parking lots south of the State Fairgrounds every weekend except July 4 and July 5. The shuttle, and parking in the lots, is free. On weekdays when the lot is full, the alternative is parking on roads in the park, or street parking just outside the park. Follow Midway Parkway out of the park to the west is the most convenient place to park on the street.
