Children are the easiest people to buy gifts for during the holidays. They generally want everything, and preferably the brightest-colored, noisiest thing in the store. I do have my fair share of battery-operated toys in my house that have flashing lights and music but my toddler son also loves playing with rocks, paint, pots and pans, and puzzles. I'm trying to encourage that side of him this Christmas so I'll be visiting some of our local independent toy stores here in the Twin Cities looking for gifts.
Local stores make it fun to take your child shopping. Independent stores have plenty of toys out for little customers to play with, several offer art and craft classes, and some have play areas, such as Wonderment's stores' tree houses.
I'm also planning to visit some non-toy-store stores, such as the Walker Shop, and Patina, which as well as art and gifts, carry cool, beautiful and inspired toys.
