Welcoming the Republicans to St. Paul
I'm one of them, but mostly because I like noise and excitement and I live a couple of blocks from the Xcel Energy Center, and looking forwards to seeing what's going to happen with the delegates, protesters, supporters, media circus, et. al.
So whether you are a Republican excited to see your party's leaders coming to your home town, or you are simply interested in the political machine, here's some ways to get involved in, or learn more about the politics of the RNC.
The Minneapolis St. Paul 2008 Welcoming Committee launched the "Spruce Up MSP" campaign, encouraging local residents and businesses to primp, paint, sweep, plant flowers and hang out red, white and blue decorations.
Held at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Civicfest celebrates Minnesota and American history, democracy, and the U.S. Presidency. On display will be replicas of Air Force One, and the Oval Office, and memorabilia and artifacts dating back to the 1780s.
Civicfest runs from August 29 - September 4.
Most of the news about protesters has been of those wanting to disrupt the Convention. Families United for Troops and Their Mission are planning a positive rally on September 1, to show their support for American service personnel.

Because all volunteers for the RNC were required to have background checks, the deadline for applying to volunteer at the convention passed back in July. However, Republican supporters can find many volunteer opportunities from now until election day, including the Convention and at the Minnesota State Fair, at John McCain's website.
