The shelf-stackers in Target, the students in the coffee shop, the fireman I bumped into outside a St. Paul fire station (Decontamination trucks and other fire trucks are being sent out to the Xcel Center, so sadly for the firefighters, they have to work instead of rally tonight) are all gossiping about Barack.
The Associated Press reported at lunchtime that Hillary Clinton is planning to concede defeat, and the speculation is that Barack Obama will claim victory as the Democratic candidate tonight. Although Obama has not technically won the nomination, he is so far in the lead, with so little time left, it would take a small miracle for Clinton to win the race now.
Rumors swirl that Hillary Clinton will be there to congratulate Obama, or sign up as his running mate, but as the media is reporting that she is on her way to New York today, that's unlikely.
But with or without Hillary, tonight's rally will be history-making, an event remembered for our potential future president on the brink of taking his party's nomination and about to fight what promises to be one of the most intense presidential campaigns in recent history.
Are you excited about Barack Obama? Are you going to the Xcel Center tonight?
Barack and Michelle Obama Rally at the Xcel Energy Center
The event is free, and it is first-come-first-served. There have been people queuing since the early hours of the morning, so expect it to be very busy, and potential disappointment if more than the 17,000 people the Xcel Energy Center seats turn up. Over 20,000 people rallied for Obama at his biggest event to date, and more may come to this rally tonight.
The doors will open at 7 p.m. and Obama is expected to speak at around 9.30 p.m.
For security reasons, limit personal belongings, especially electronics and heavy coats, and no signs or banners will be permitted.
