Plastic Bottles: Pilot Program Hopes to Expand Minneapolis' Recycling Efforts

Monday May 19, 2008
Plastic tubs, yogurt pots, bottles without necks and lots more plastic items that can't usually be recycled, can now have a chance at a second life. On the top of my kitchen cupboard (and I know many more kitchens are the same!) is a big pile of odd shaped bottles and pots that have the wrong recycling codes to go in the recycling bin, but looked too useful to go in the garbage.

The Eastside Food Co-op, the City of Minneapolis and Consolidated Containers, a plastics manufacturer, have joined up for a pilot expansion of Minneapolis' recycling program. On Thursdays and Fridays, 8 a.m. - 4.30 p.m., from now until September, plastics may be taken to the Eastside Food Co-op for recycling.

The plastics must be rinsed and sorted by their recycling codes - the number in the triangle on the bottom - and they are accepting plastics bearing numbers 1 through 6. If plenty of people bring their plastics, then the pilot program hopes to become a regular part of the City of Minneapolis' recycling program.

Thanks for reporting on this. If you happen to have a job, you can now take part in this great recycling program after work, according to the Eastside Co-op website:

EXTENDED HOURS BEGIN THURSDAY, JUNE 5!
Our first extended hours will be on Thursday evenings, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning June 5.

Please, everyone—take the time to bring your currently “un-recyclable” plastics now so that Minneapolis will see the value in picking them up from you later!!!
