Event Review: Wishes for the Sky, April 20
On Saturday, the organizers of Sunday's Wishes for the Sky event must have been wishing hard on for good weather. After all the rain on Saturday, Sunday dawned grey and gloomy, but by midday, the clouds had blown away revealing a brilliant blue sky, a gentle breeze, and the perfect day to fly a kite.
There's an ancient Chinese tradition of flying wishes up to the heavens on a kite. The Wishes for the Sky festival in St. Paul updates the tradition for Earth Day. The festival was held on Harriet Island, on the east bank of the Mississippi, opposite downtown St. Paul. Hundreds of volunteers helped distribute kites and gave flying advice. Festival-goers decorated their kites with their own wishes, and sent them soaring into the sky.
On a beautiful day, in a unique location, it was a very uplifting way to begin spring.
